چکیده

The role of density-dependent individual growth in the recruitment dynamics of fish populations has rarely been analysed in a quantitative framework. Variations of mean size of juveniles in response to changes in population densities have frequently been observed in salmonids and it has been shown that body-size differences at the juvenile stage can persist through the sub-adult and adult stage. As fecundity and sexual maturation are often a function of body size, inter-cohort variations in individual growth may ultimately affect the reproductive output and, consequently, the amount of yearly recruitment. Here, we present a simulation analysis investigating the effects of density-dependent growth on the reproductive output and, ultimately, on the population dynamics of stream-dwelling salmonids. The demographic model used for the numerical analysis was parameterised using marble trout Salmo marmoratus as a reference species and explicitly accounted for the occurrence of major floods events causing the population to collapse to very low densities. Our simulations showed that density-dependent individual growth is a powerful mechanism to foster population resilience through compensatory recruitment. In addition, we argue that density-dependent growth also helps regulate recruitment at high population densities. We show that even slight variations in the growth trajectories of fish substantially affect the size and the dynamics of the population. S. Vincenzi, A. J. Crivelli, D. Jesensek, G. A. Within- and among-population variation in vital rates and population dynamics in a variable environment.

Understanding the causes of within- and among-population differences in vital rates, life histories, and population dynamics is a central topic in ecology. To understand how within- and among-population variation emerges, we need long-term studies that include episodic events and contrasting environmental conditions, data to characterize individual and shared variation, and statistical models t...

Total population density during the first year of life as a major determinant of lifetime body-length trajectory in marble trout

The conditions experienced early in life can strongly influence life-history trajectories in a variety of animal species. Here, we use data from four isolated populations of the endangered stream-dwelling salmonid marble trout (Salmo marmoratus Cuvier 1817) living in the Soca and Idrijca river basins (Slovenia) to explore the influence of the total density experienced during and after the first...

Morphological differences in the skin of marble trout Salmo marmoratus and of brown trout Salmo trutta.

Despite being genetically very closely related, the marble trout Salmo marmoratus and the brown trout Salmo trutta exhibit marked phenotypic differences, particularly with regard to skin pigmentation. Histological analysis of skin from the head and gill cover of differently aged individuals of the two species was carried out in order to characterize differences in skin structure. The basic stru...

Extreme genetic differentiation among the remnant populations of marble trout (Salmo marmoratus) in Slovenia.

Populations of the marble trout (Salmo marmoratus) have declined critically due to introgression by brown trout (Salmo trutta) strains. In order to define strategies for long-term conservation, we examined the genetic structure of the 8 known pure populations using 15 microsatellite loci. The analyses reveal extraordinarily strong genetic differentiation among populations separated by < 15 km, ...

Determining Individual Variation in Growth and Its Implication for Life-History and Population Processes Using the Empirical Bayes Method

The differences in demographic and life-history processes between organisms living in the same population have important consequences for ecological and evolutionary dynamics. Modern statistical and computational methods allow the investigation of individual and shared (among homogeneous groups) determinants of the observed variation in growth. We use an Empirical Bayes approach to estimate ind...
